Trying to Find Purple in Depression

The streak has been ruined... I watched this movie on Tuesday and was caught speechless.  I could not get into it.  So a man pops out of the theater screen and falls in love with a woman that has seen his film five times (The Purple Rose of Cairo).  The story takes place during the Great Depression when theatres were booming in business.  Theaters were seen not only as  a movie house, but a form of shelter during these times.    The Purple Rose of Cairo consisted of slapstick comedy and situational humor. Through this combination of humor, the author influenced the audience to feel and live the emotional stress and pain citizens experienced during this time.  I thought the underlining theme of the whole film was to actually show how theaters and entertainment helped people escape from reality.  Every time the main character Cecilia would go to the theatre she would enjoy herself and then she would return home to her ungrateful husband and her poverty stricken life.  Things changed when a "handsome" character from the movie actually came to life and fell in love with Cecilia.  All of sudden Cecelia felt loved and entertained. To me this signified  "escape from reality". Until the real actor (signifyng real life) returned and claimed his character shouldn't exist.  Cecilia ends up telling the character to back into the film because he is not real and tries to be with the real actor. This signifies to the audience Cecilia is returning to real life.  When she tries to meet up with the actor he has already left Hollywood. Once again symbolizing to the audience how hard life was during those times.

I really liked the message.  I did not like the silly plot.  Hopefully this film will become more clear and humorous after Monday's discussion. Im hoping James will have the ability to confide in this disappointed critic.  On a personal level, he seems to have really enjoyed this film.
